Man Dies After Getting Sucked Into MRI Machine

Rajesh Maru (32), carrying a liquid oxygen cylinder, was killed on Saturday evening when he was yanked into the jaws of the MRI machine and inhaled the gas that leaked out of the container, his family said.

He was at Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, to help his brother-in-law Harish Solanki's mother Laxmi.

According to media reports, when Maru entered the MRI room, the metallic cylinder activated the MRI machine's magnetic force which sucked the victim into it, along with the cylinder.

The one thing that you need to know about an MRI machine is that no metal is allowed inside the room in which it's housed, as it will get sucked into the machine by the powerful magnets.

However, the MRI machine was turned on.

MRI scanners use incredibly strong magnetic fields, along with electric field gradients and radio waves, to generate highly detailed 3-dimensional images of the body.

Naranbhai Jitiya, Maru's relative, said, "He died within two minutes of getting sucked inside".

Mr Maru's family allege he was told it was OK to bring an oxygen tank into the MRI room.

Even the police have said that the ward boy or doctor should have told the family to not take oxygen cylinder close to the machine.

Efforts to revive Maru in Nair Hospital's trauma ward failed as he passed away due to excess inhalation of oxygen.

Meanwhile, Maru's relative blamed the hospital authorities' negligence for his death.

Solanki further alleged that the MRI machine was functioning when Maru was called in, though the hospital flatly denied it. At around 8.30 pm, he got trapped between the oxygen cylinder he was holding and the MRI machine. "Sixtyfive- year-old Laxmi Solanki who was admitted in MICU suffering from meningitis and pneumonia she was critical, and also on oxygen support", said Dr Bharmal.

The Maharashtra government has announced a Rs five lakh compensation to the kin of the victim. Metallic objects are pulled towards it and must not be carried into the room.

Police said the incident is still under investigation and they are recording statements of the staff who were present in the MRI department.

Mumbai police opened a criminal case against Dr. Siddhant Shah and ward attendants Vitthal Chavan and Sunita Surve, charging death by negligence.
