Airline CEO Takes Pay Cut To Match Female Predecessor's Salary

Lundgren, who assumed post in December with an annual salary of 740,000 pounds (843,000 euros), will charge 34,000 pounds (39,000 euros) a year less, to equate his salary to that of his predecessor in office, Carolyn McCall.

Mr Lundgren, 51, began his role as chief executive on December 1 past year, joining from tour operator Tui. He has now said that to demonstrate his commitment to "address the gender imbalance" he has asked the board to cut his pay to match that of McCall.

McCall joined British broadcaster ITV earlier this month and is paid $1.3 million annually, which her new company described as "broadly the same remuneration opportunity" as her male predecessor.

The gender pay gap at EasyJet is now 51.7%, a gap the company attributes not to unequal pay for women but to the "massive gender imbalance" in its and the aviation industry's pilot community.

It blames this, however, on an industry-wide dominance of men in pilot roles, rather than "unequal pay" for the same job functions.

EasyJet said they recognised "we need to do better". EasyJet has set itself a target that a fifth of all new pilots recruited should be female by 2020, up from 6% in 2015 and 13% now.

According to figures, only 4 percent of commercial airline pilots are women, and only 5 percent of EasyJet pilots are indeed women. Past year it recruited 49 female pilots.
