Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had said on January 12 that their governments would not allow the release of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-director film.

Karni Sena also called out to people to lay curfews at theatres across the country to stop the film's screening. On 18 January, the SC had ruled out any impositions of ban on Bhansali's magnum opus and maintained that in no situation can a film be banned after getting clearance by the Central Board of Film Certification.
