The Newest: Governor vows to reopen Statue of Liberty

NY state will pay to reopen the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, both of which have been closed due to the government shutdown, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday.

"We will not stand by as this symbol of freedom and opportunity goes dark", Cuomo tweeted.

"This is our public land, and we should be able to use it any time we want", she said.

The Statue of Liberty, temporarily closed by a USA government budget shutdown, will reopen on Monday to once again beckon other countries' "huddled masses" - as well as not-so-poor tourists with dollars to spend.

IOC President Thomas Bach confirmed that the two nations would march together at the opening ceremony on February 9. They will be selected by the head coach from South Korea and must include three North Korean players for each game.

Visitors to the Statue of Liberty take photos from onboard a ferry that will cruise the bay around the statue and Ellis Island, Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, in NY. And her message has never been as important as it is today.

When the Senate failed to approve legislation to keep the government from shutting down before midnight Saturday, the National Park Service announced that the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island would close immediately until further notice.

"There's a little different philosophy on the shutdown from the Obama administration, which was, 'We're going to try to inflict pain on the American people, '" Daines said.

Gov. Cuomo promised to find a way to get boats to the iconic New York Harbor landmark up and running. The state will provide $65,000 to cover the costs of operating the sites, which will include paying National Park Service staff.

"From our point of view, it's a good investment because the revenue we gain from the tourists is multiples of what it will cost to actually pay to open the Statue of Liberty", Cuomo said. He says they have other plans, but their morning was shot. "We want to keep it open literally".

"It's disappointing", one visitor said. "The concept of closing the doors to immigrants is repugnant to the concept of America".

And he says the closure of the statue is a metaphor for what he says President Trump and Congress are doing through their policies on immigration.

"It's a bit of an odd thing to stop", said Paul Connor, 35, who was hoping to see Lady Liberty up-close-and-personal.
