MoHUA announces 9 new smart cities under Smart Cities Mission

Three cities of Uttar Pradesh are among nine chosen in the latest round of the Centre's flagship Smart City Mission, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri said today.

In media Briefing to reporters in New Delhi, the minister stated that the nine cities have proposed an investment of 12 thousand 824 crore rupees to develop 409 projects.

As on January 17, 2,948 projects worth Rs 1.38 lakh crore were in various stages of implementation, while 189 projects worth Rs 2,237 crore had been completed, a Ministry official said.

The union minister added that the review of Smart City projects such as Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Smart Cities Mission, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Awaz Yojana was done with Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and was optimistic on the results. Center government was set to announce 10 names, but Shillong could not submit its proposal.

The government also announced the commencement of field surveys for the Livability Index, which will rank all the 99 smart cities, million-plus cities and all state capitals. Around Rs2,185 crore would go into wider pan-city projects. The total proposed investment in the 99 Smart City Mission would Rs 2,03,979 crore. He added that ABD will be developed as a lighthouse, to be replicated by the rest of the city. Of these, only Rs 2500 crore (approximately) will be spent by States. In the duration of 2 years, which is a small period in terms of urban development life-cycle, the mission is picking up momentum, he said.

Puri said Kolkata's New Town, which was selected for the mission in May 2016, was yet to form a special objective vehicle to start implementing the projects.
