Wales turn to Giggs to lead national team, again

The managerial spot of the Welsh national team has been vacant ever since former boss Chris Coleman left the job to take over as the manager of Sunderland in the EFL Championship in November a year ago.

But he will attempt to ensure the Dragons make back-to-back appearances at the European Championship after Coleman coached them to the Euro 2016 semi-finals - Wales's first major tournament for 58 years.

After failing to qualify for Russian Federation the new manager will first have the new UEFA Nations League to compete in, with Wales in the second division, before qualifying for the 2020 Euros begins. I want to enjoy it, I've got a great group pf players to work with.

Giggs said he has not made any decision on his backroom staff but he will hold talks with Osian Roberts, the FAW's technical director, who was also an assistant to Coleman.

After a flurry of rejections, false promises and setbacks the Welshman has kick-started his managerial career with Wales after signing a four year deal.

Giggs' appointment was met with a mixed reaction among some supporters, but a player who won 64 caps for his country remains unfazed by any criticism.

Giggs is set to appear for a news conference at 2pm.

However, the 44-year-old looks to have secured the position left vacant by Chris Coleman, who left after the Welsh failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup.

He ended his playing career in 2014 and was Louis van Gaal's assistant at Old Trafford for the following two seasons before leaving United in 2016 after Jose Mourinho was appointed as manager. "But if I were a Wales player, that wouldn't bother me one little bit".

"We haven't been in a World Cup since 1958 and I want to do it". Giggs revealed there had been some "Fergie Time' on the phone already and he said he would speak to one of the "greatest managers, if not the greatest manager, that's ever lived" again about his new role". His only stint before came as the interim boss of Manchester United towards the end of the 2013/14 campaign, when he was asked to take over from the sacked David Moyes.
