Famed racer Dan Gurney dead at 86

The former driver, team owner, engineer and innovator, whom many considered one of the greatest all-around racing drivers of all time, reportedly died of of complications related to pneumonia.

In a statement, Gurney's wife Evi and family delivered a final statement ahead of a private funeral for the legendary motorsports figure.

Gurney began racing in 1955 and won in almost every racing series he attempted.

Andretti's respect for Gurney endures today, as he offers his condolences (as does his son Michael) and shares memories.

As racing mourns the loss of American hero and legend Dan Gurney, who died yesterday at his home in Newport Beach at the age of 86, tributes from all areas of motorsport and beyond are pouring in.

Spanning the first AAR chassis, the priceless Mark 1 that carried Gurney to victory at the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, to the last, 1999's Eagle 997 Indy vehicle, the Los Angeles exhibit celebrated all the automotive milestones that rolled out of AAR's shop in nearby Santa Ana.

According to a report by ESPN, Gurney won four Formula One races, five NASCAR competitions and seven IndyCar races from the years 1962 to 1970.
