Whistleblower Manning seeks US Senate seat

Manning would be challenging Maryland's senior senator, Democrat Benjamin Cardin, who is now serving a second term.

Chelsea has declined to speak about her reasons for running, only saying "Our only statement on the record is "No statement".

Former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who served prison time for leaking classified information, filed to run as a Democratic candidate for Senate in Maryland.

The revelations by Manning, who is transgender and was then known as Bradley Manning, exposed covered-up misdeeds and possible crimes by USA troops and allies.

President Barack Obama commuted Manning's sentence in January 2017 and Manning was released from prison in May 2017.

Manning has now gone from prison to U.S. senatorial candidate in less than a year during which she often made headlines, as the fame and infamy she gained by leaking a trove of classified documents follows her after release.

Manning has been a visible activist for LGBTQ rights and other causes since her release.

Manning was born in Oklahoma.

Cardin is also yet to file.

The Washington Post first reported Saturday that Manning has filed to run in Maryland for the seat of Democratic Sen. But campaign finance reports show that his organization had almost $2 million cash on hand in late September. Manning recently tweeted out the message "f--k the police" on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, along with the hashtag #DisarmThePolice.
