Pending charges in 911 hoax introduces swatting into lexicon of many Calgarians

For those unaware, "swatting" is when someone calls in a false police report that results in SWAT swarming in for an arrest, and Barriss has already faced prison time once before back in 2016.

The California man accused of making a phony 911 call that led to the fatal police shooting of a 28-year-old man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. The 25-year-old is also charged with giving false alarm and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Finch, who was unarmed, was fatally shot by police after he answered the door.

Police have said they believed Finch was armed when he moved his hands toward his waistband and then motioned toward officers.

A fugitive-from-justice warrant filed by Los Angeles County prosecutors says Barriss was charged in Kansas on December 29 with the felony of making a false alarm. Finch appears to have no connection to the game or the dispute arising from it.

"Someone tried to SWAT me and got an innocent man killed, the person said on Twitter according to Rolling Stone".

This week, Canadian police issued an arrest warrant for Barriss, accusing him of placing an eerily similar call just six days before the Kansas shooting.

Barriss had a reputation for helping people gain revenge against online enemies and gaming opponents through swatting - placing a hoax phone call about a unsafe situation in order to trigger a massive police response at an address to frighten its occupants.

Reports say Barriss was called by someone after a feud between two Call of Duty players broke out over a virtual "friendly kill" during a game earlier that day.

On the evening of December 22, officers were deployed to an apartment building in the community of Bankview after someone called 911 claiming that they had shot their father and taken members of their family hostage.

Barriss waived extradition to Kansas last week.
