Trump cancels United Kingdom trip, blames embassy 'bad deal'

President Donald Trump said /a he canceled a February trip to the United Kingdom for the opening of a new U.S. embassy there due to what he described as a "bad deal" he said was made during the Obama administration. In a tweet, he blamed the Obama administration.

President Trump said he canceled a planned trip to London because he doesn't want to cut the ribbon at the new US embassy there that he described as a "bad deal".

Despite Mr Trump blaming his predecessor for the decision, the embassy move from Grosvenor Square was initiated by the George W Bush administration.

The President was not due to meet the Queen until a full state visit at a later date.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called on May to cancel the invitation after Trump retweeted anti-Muslim videos from a far-right Twitter account in November, accusing the US president of promoting a "vile, extremist group", The Associated Press reported at the time.

MPs have repeatedly called for the offer of a state visit for the US President to be withdrawn following his crackdown on immigration from majority-Muslim countries and promotion of far-right group Britain First on Twitter.

Trump had also been scheduled to hold talks with Theresa May in No 10 Downing Street, with February 26 and 27 marked in the diary for the visit.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has feuded with Trump on numerous ocassions, said, "President Trump has used Twitter to promote a vile, extremist group that exists exclusively to sow division and hatred in our country".

Last month, PM Theresa May's cabinet minister Sam Gyimah had said he would feel "deeply uncomfortable" if President Trump's visit went ahead after May clashed with Trump over United States president retweets of far-right anti-Muslim propaganda, Britain First.

"Big protests if he came to cut ribbon".

US diplomats are expected to move in to the new quarters this month.

But London mayor Sadiq Khan - who has clashed with the president in the past - was one of those not buying that excuse.

Trump has sparked alarm among diplomats by repeatedly entering into Twitter spats with key public figures, including North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, to whom he recently boasted about the size of the USA nuclear arsenal.

Mr Trump's tweet cancelling his visit sparked a welcome reaction from some politicians.
