Sam's Club stores abruptly close

The company will convert up to 12 of the impacted clubs to eCommerce fulfillment centers in a move that will speed delivery of online orders, with the balance of the facilities closing over the next few weeks.

Jessica Buckner, an audit team lead at a Sam's Club location in Anchorage, told local TV station KTVA that all Alaska stores are closing as part of a larger downsizing across the U.S.

The employees at the San Pedro store will still recieve a bonus, according to Walmart spokesperson Anne Hatfield.

Walmart also closed a Neighborhood Market store on the city's North East side last month.

Employees commented on WCPO's Facebook page and said they had no notice of the closure before receiving a letter in the mail.

Sam's Club, the membership-only warehouse stores owned by Walmart, confirmed on Thursday that it is closing locations across the country. The store would close, for good, January 26, a sign on the store stated.

The closings come the same day that Walmart annouced it will increase its starting wage and give employees cash bonuses.

Phillip Keene, a spokesperson for Wal-Mart, the parent company of Sam's Club, says over 500 employees are affected by the closures in NY state.

The Lantana store's voicemail says the store is closed today but will be open tomorrow. He said some employees have been with the wholesale company for two decades.

The three stores in New Jersey shuttered are in Mount Olive, Linden and West Windsor. "They are increasing salaries to over a million American workers". The reform reduces the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% and includes other provisions that benefit businesses and are meant to spur investment. Some companies will invest capital, some companies will return money to workers.

"It's a great thing for employees up and down the ranks, but especially at store level", he said.
