Iran's supreme leader accuses US & Britain of trying to overthrow Islamic republic

The number is far higher than the 450 people Iranian authorities previously said were detained.

Four days ago, Russian ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia claimed that the United States is exploiting the protests in Iran in order to derail the landmark nuclear deal with the Middle East country.

Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's official Twitter account posted a string of 11 tweets on Tuesday, all of them criticizing what the revolutionary leader claimed was a US -led conspiracy that had manifested itself in violent anti-government protests.

"Actions such as the adoption of this resolution as well as hostile comments and moves by that country's government against the noble Iranian nation, which emanate from U.S. rulers' acquisitive and domineering nature, have always been known to the valiant Iranian nation, and are undoubtedly a failed policy", he added, according to the Foreign Ministry's official website.

By the time, the coast guards came to rescue the migrants, one of the ships had already sunk and only 16 people could be saved. The boat was carrying 150 people when it set off from the eastern town of Garbouli, according to Italy's coastguard.

On Monday, a separate judiciary official announced that a detainee had committed suicide in Tehran's Evin prison.

"On the one hand, the USA government, in a hypocritical move and by chanting utterly false slogans, claims to be supporting the Iranian people, and on the other hand, taunts the civilized Iranian nation by imposing unfair sanctions, barring Iranian nationals from entering that country, and showing other malicious behaviors".

Earlier today, addressing the first PIO-Parliamentarians Conference here, Modi said, "India is changing, India is transforming". Today, bodies like the World Bank, IMF and Moody's are looking at India in a very positive way.

A judiciary official said on Tuesday that a detainee in Arak, a town about 200 km (124 miles) south of Tehran, committed suicide, according to Mizan, the website of the Iranian judiciary. Iran has seen its largest anti-government protests since the disputed presidential election in 2009.

Demonstrations broke out across Iran last month fueled by anger at the lackluster economy and official corruption.

In Twitter posts and on his website, the country's supreme leader mocked Trump's assertion that "the Iranian government is afraid of USA power", the New York Times reported.
