Quake with magnitude 7.6 hits Caribbean; damage being assessed

An quake that registered at 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the Caribbean Tuesday night off the coast of Honduras.

In the Cayman Islands, Sgt. Dave McKay with Royal Cayman Islands Police told The Associated Press that hazard management officials had not issued a tsunami alert but authorities were monitoring the situation.

The quake was felt across northern Central America, prompting a tsunami warning in Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Islands, but little damage and no casualties have been reported. Waves were expected to be up to 3 feet above tide level.

But two hours after the quake, the threat of a tsunami had passed, and the Tsunami Warning Center withdrew all advisories connected with the quake.

The epicenter was located 202 kilometres from the Honduran town of Barra Patuca, and 245 kilometres from the municipality of Puerto Lempira (Honduras).

The temblor was only 6.2 miles deep.
