Google Doodle Celebrates Scientist Har Gobind Khorana, Who Helped Better Understand DNA

Although Khorana's exact date of birth is not known, the Nobel Prize website lists it as January 9, 1922.

Born in a small village in Raipur, Dr. Khorana's father taught him how to read and write.

Khorana attended the D.A.V.

The scientist went to high school in Multan, which is now in Pakistan.

Khorana would go on to conduct research at universities in England, Switzerland and Canada, and it was at the University of Wisconsin that he and two fellow researchers received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1968, it said. Through scholarships, Khorana eventually earned his doctorate in organic chemistry at the age of 26 - and then began his worldwide academic career, conducting research in Canada, England, and Switzerland before settling in the United States.

-Married to Swiss Esther Elizabeth Sibler, Khorana's biography praised Sibler for bringing a "consistent sense of a time when, [Har] Khorana felt out of place everywhere and at home nowhere". "He was survived by his children, Julia and Dave".

Har Gobind received the Nobel Prize in the field of medicine for his work on understanding and interpreting genetic code and how it functions in protein synthesis.

The scientist discovered the order of nucleotides and determines how DNA are built in our body. Har Gobind Khorana is known for extensive research on DNA. These building blocks are hooked together to form a chain of DNA. Nucleotides are subunits of DNA or RNA, and consist of bases made of nitrogen.

Several years later, Khorana created the first synthetic gene - a step that led to commercialized gene synthesis at businesses around the world. Four years later, he announced that he was able to function an artificial gene within a bacterial cell.

During his later years, Khorna experimented on the molecular mechanisms underlying the cell, signaling pathways of vision in vertebrates.

Khorana died of natural causes on November 9, 2011 in Concord, Massachusetts at the age of 89.
