Best-picture nominees are The Shape of Water, Three Billboards, 'The Darkest Hour, 'Dunkirk and Call Me By Your Name.

Notably, in a year that has been dominated by issues of gender inequality and sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry, the best director category, as at the Globes, consisted entirely of men, with Nolan, Del Toro, McDonagh, Denis Villeneuve ("Blade Runner 2049"), and Luca Guadagnino ("Call Me By Your Name") scoring nominations. Guillermo del Toro is nominated for both director and original screenplay, Sally Hawkins for leading actress and Octavia Spencer for supporting actress. Also, the Handmaiden was nominated for Film Not in the English Language.

"Darkest Hour" is set in the early days of World War II, when British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had to make a decision on whether to negotiate with Hitler. "But we consider Joe to have been behind all of the film's nominations".

The Disaster Artist failed to win a single nomination, despite James Franco (who also directed) taking home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Who thought I'd turn into Stephen Fry?

Winners will be announced on February 18, two weeks before the Oscars.
