Sydney clocks the hottest place on earth as hot weather continues

The temperature near Sydney was 47.3°C (117.1°F) on Sunday afternoon, making it temporarily the hottest place on Earth.

Temperatures across Australia soared to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit due to a brutal heatwave across the country.

This was surpassed by another record set at the Old Richmond Station at 47.8°C.

Inner Sydney didn't get quite as hot as the western suburbs.

The Penrith observatory recorded a minimum of above 30 degrees Celsius, with humidity as high as 91 percent.

"The total fire bans are again in force today for the Greater Sydney environment which includes the Blue Mountains and the Central Coast, but also the Greater Hunter region which is effectively from Newcastle up through the Hunter to places like Scone and Muswellbrook", he said.
