John Dickerson named new co-host of

CBS "Face the Nation" host John Dickerson is leaving Washington to take over as the third host of the "CBS This Morning", pairing with Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell as the replacement for the fired Charlie Rose. It's not clear if Dickerson will continue to host the program after he joins "CBS This Morning".

While no surprise - Dickerson has had a successful run at "Nation" since 2015 - this move does represent a return to a traditional morning TV format.

Rose was sacked in late November following allegations of sexual misconduct. King and O'Donnell announced the anchor's termination from the network on November 21.

By naming Dickerson, a veteran Beltway journalist who often provides historical analysis in his coverage, CBS News is sending a signal that its morning program will retain its positioning as a hard-news alternative to the other broadcast networks' offerings in that time slot. The decision came after an investigation found that Chaggaris violated company policy. He will continue hosting Face the Nation at least through the weekend as Rhodes and executive producer Mary Hager determine what's next for the Sunday show.

CBS tried out a handful of potential Rose's replacement in the weeks since he was sacked before settling on Dickerson.

The appointment comes a week after NBC's announcement that Hoda Kotb has replaced Matt Lauer on the competing "Today" show - another job that opened because of a firing due to sexual misconduct charges. In addition to her work with Guthrie and weatherman Al Roker during the newscast's first two hours, Kotb also kept her fourth-hour duties as she continues to celebrate life with BFF Kathie Lee Gifford.

In response to the stories, CBS severed ties with Rose, who also contributed to the network's long-running newsmagazine 60 Minutes, with PBS dropping his eponymous interview show.
