Nebraska Community Blood Bank Needs Donations

Twenty-five blood drives across the state were canceled during last week's storm, leaving the Massachusetts Red Cross 681 donations short.

The blood bank just sent both blood and platelets to the east coast Monday morning, but now they need help replenishing their supplies. The American Red Cross says these affected more than 28,000 fewer donations than needed in November and December.

"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", said Christy Peters, external communications manager of the local Red Cross Blood Services Region.

Merrimack market sells big winning ticket
A Powerball victor may choose to receive the jackpot in 30 annual payments or a one-time, lump-sum cash payment. Powerball tickets are sold in 44 states, and Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Donors can schedule an appointment by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting or calling 1-800-733-2767.

The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 donations every day for patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide.

A recent press released stated donations during the holiday season were lower than anticipated, placing the Central Texas blood supply at a "dangerously low" level. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all require blood to help save their lives.

The agency also needs type O negative blood, which is a universal blood type that anyone can receive. However, Kulman says anyone who is sick should delay donating blood until they feel better.

Eligible donors with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a Power Red donation, where available.

Eligible donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 115 pounds. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
