AT&T reportedly backs out of deal to sell Huawei smartphones

Huawei had been expected to announce Tuesday at a Las Vegas trade show that it had struck an agreement with AT&T, marking its first partnership with a major USA mobile carrier.

For the time being, no one from Huawei or AT&T has stepped forward to talk about what has transpired, so our only hope is for Huawei to provide us some information during its CES 2018 appearance. AT&T will not be part of a Huawei announcement on Tuesday, according to people familiar with the matter. But the Journal reported that Huawei, the world's No. 3 smartphone maker by shipments previous year, was expected to announce that it had struck an agreement with AT&T at a Las Vegas trade show today.

That placed Huawei's smartphones at a considerable disadvantage compared to Apple, Samsung and other phone makers whose products are readily available from mobile carriers' stores.

It remains to be seen if the Mate 10 Pro will be sold only unlocked, or if Huawei finds another carrier partner for the phone's United States release. The move could have helped Huawei increase its market share in the U.S. The two companies declined to comment on the topic. Since most phones are purchased through carriers, it's nearly impossible for a manufacturer to gain serious market share without support from AT&T or Verizon, the two largest U.S. wireless networks. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that AT&T had pulled out of a deal to sell Huawei phones.
