Airport firefighter injured after 2 passenger planes collide at Toronto airport

The Transportation Safety Board was onsite at Toronto Pearson Friday to investigate the collision, the airport confirmed.

A WestJet Boeing 737-800 that was inbound from Cancun, Mexico, with 168 passengers on board and a crew of six, was stationary and waiting to proceed to a gate when it was struck by a Sunwing aircraft moving back from another gate. There were no passengers on the China Southern plane, Marsico said.

Fire and emergency services responded to the collision on Saturday between a Sunwing Airlines aircraft and Westjet Airlines plane. "We looked out the window and saw that the plane had backed up into us".

Ali Alagheband, an engineer from Toronto travelling aboard the Westjet flight with his wife and son, said chaos erupted shortly after the plane touched down early Friday night.

Adriana Lobo, who was traveling with her children aboard the WestJet plane, said passengers were initially unsure of what had happened until they were evacuated.

But he said the crew's primary piece of advice was at odds with what he felt to be the safest approach. "I was telling my wife, 'to hell with keeping seated, we've got to get out of here"'.

No passengers or crew were hurt, but Beverly MacDonald, a spokesperson for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, said an airport firefighter was hospitalized with unspecified injuries.

She only realised how serious the situation had been once she was out of the plane.

The Sunwing, which had no passengers on board, was being towed out of a gate at the time.
