Sensex rallies over 150 points; Realty Metal Index gain

Sensex ended higher by 184 points at 34,153, While Nifty was higher by 54 points at 10,558.

On the sectoral front, media rose 1.45 per cent, private bank 0.95 per cent, infra 0.94 per cent, FMCG 0.84 per cent, auto 0.73 per cent, realty 0.73 per cent, pharma 0.70 per cent, bank 0.55 per cent, metal 0.45 per cent, finance service 0.43 per cent and IT 0.37 per cent.

BSE Midcap and small cap indexes rose 122 points and 187 points respectively. During the first week of 2018, the Sensex notched up a rise of 97.02 points, or 0.28 per cent.

Major Sensex gainers on Friday were: Yes Bank, up 5.03 per cent at Rs 333.05; Adani Ports, up 3.71 per cent at Rs 424.45; Bharti Airtel, up 3.36 per cent at Rs 540; IndusInd Bank, up 3.17 per cent at Rs 1,698.50; and Dr Reddy's Lab, up 2.40 per cent at Rs 2,467.35.

Consumers 'sending clear message to vehicle industry' over diesel engines

Shares of Idea Cellular rallied for the second day, rising 10.67 per cent, after the company unveiled a plan to raise up to Rs 6,750 crore ahead of its merger with Vodafone.

The dollar's gains against major world currencies after a strong USA manufacturing data also impacted the rupee sentiment, a currency dealer said.

Brokers said improved liquidity in the market following continuous foreign fund inflows and increased buying by domestic institutional investors after the government moved forward on its bank recapitalisation programme boosted trading sentiments.

The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 continued with gains for the second consecutive trade session to close at new high levels riding on positive global cues, along with inflow of foreign funds and healthy buying in consumer durables, banking and auto stocks.

The broad-based NSE Nifty too was up 30.30 points, or 0.28 per cent, at 10,508.20.
