Federal Bureau of Investigation documents: Andrew McCabe had no conflict in Hillary Clinton email probe

The FBI is investigating whether the Clinton Foundation accepted donations in exchange for political favors while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, two people familiar with the probe confirmed today.

Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd wrote that part of what the department would do was assess whether "any matters now under investigation require further resources", though he said his letter should not be construed as confirming or denying any probe.

Sessions in November directed senior federal prosecutors to evaluate a number of Republican grievances and determine whether a special counsel should be appointed to look into allegations that the Clinton Foundation benefited from an Obama-era uranium transaction involving a Russian state company.

The Justice Department has opened up an new investigation into the Clinton Foundation to see if it conducted "pay-to-play" politics or other illegal activities while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, The Hill reported on Thursday.

During the campaign, Trump supporter Jeff Sessions, then an Alabama senator and now the attorney general, suggested that Clinton used her high position as secretary of state to "extort" global governments for her family's foundation.

"The worst thing that can happen to Bill and Hillary, short of being indicted, is for the government to claw back money from their donors, who took tax breaks to which they weren't entitled because the foundation was not properly registered as a bonafide charity", he said. There were also concerns within the Justice Department about the close proximity to the election, CNN reported at the time. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the interview was "extremely professional and unquestionably thorough".

"Time after time, the Clinton Foundation has been subjected to politically motivated allegations, and time after time these allegations have been proven false", Craig Minassian said in a statement to CNN.

President Donald Trump had been calling for the investigation for months. "This is a philanthropy that does life-changing work, which Republicans have tried to turn into a political football". It began with a now long-debunked project spearheaded by Steve Bannon during the presidential campaign.

"The goal is to distract from the indictments, guilty pleas, and accusations of treason from Trump's own people at the expense of our justice system's integrity", he said. Democrats say Trump is trying to steer attention away from investigations examining whether his campaign was involved with Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election.
