Amazon Reportedly Planning To Bid For English Premier League Streaming Rights

The last BT and Sky deal, inked in 2015, covered 168 live games per season for a three-season price of £5.14 billion and has seen an explosion in the finances available to top-tier clubs. Bloomberg reports that the online retailer is preparing to bid for matches next month, likely providing traditional United Kingdom broadcasters Sky and BT with some much-needed competition over the next three years.

Sporting events are huge and many companies know this, which is why it isn't surprising that in recent times we've started to hear that many tech companies such as Twitter, Facebook, and more are trying to get the rights to stream various sporting matches and events on their platform in a bid to drive up the number of users.

The American company have refused to comment on the matter, but it is reported that they are seriously exploring the option of bidding for the Premier League rights between 2019 and 2022. In April, Amazon acquired the streaming rights to ten NFL Thursday Night Football games. It would be a big step for the company, which already streams Thursday night National Football League games and ATP Tennis, though going up against the likes of Sky and BT means the rights aren't going to be cheap. The firm have previously said they would "look to add content that Prime members want".

The pair recently struck a deal whereby Sky made its sports offering available to BT TV subscribers via the integration of OTT offering Now TV into BT's service and BT agreed to wholesale its sports channels to Sky for the first time.

Some observers are sceptical about the likelihood of a bid for Premier League football, however. The League is hoping to raise more than the £5.14 billion (€5.77 billion) it secured under the current rights agreements with Sky and BT.
