"Bomb cyclone" to slam East Coast with more bitterly cold weather

The storm is expected to bring as much as 6 inches of snow to the region. The "bomb cyclone" is a result of "bombogenesis", which NOAA defines as "the formation of [a] rapidly strengthening weather system" due to quickly decreasing pressure in a cyclone.

The storm was dropping inches of snow in SC, as well, as it moved up the coast first to the mid-Atlantic and then to New England. The storm is expected to take shape off the coast of Florida late on January 3, according to the Washington Post, intensifying as it hits the Mid-Atlantic and eastern New England regions.

But the worst part of the storm may be the lingering cold that it will leave behind. Snow also is expected along the coasts of Georgia and SC. The closer the storm gets, the more accurate the predictions about it will be. However, if the storm heads east and out into seas, the amount of snow will decrease and wind speeds will die down.

As the storm moves up the coast, it will continue to intensify (the quickening seriousness of the storm is another reason that the weather-wonks have deemed it the "bomb cyclone"). Parts of the US will be hit as well.
