Israeli tanks, aircraft strike Hamas targets in Gaza after rocket attack

The IDF fired artillery shells at two Hamas compounds in the eastern Gaza Strip, and the IAF bombed the same compounds in retaliation for a rocket attack on Israeli settlements near the border, the IDF spokesperson reported Friday.

"The Iron Dome air-defense system intercepted two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip", the newspaper reported.

Police bomb disposal experts are working at the scene.

According to Aljezera, there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Witnesses said Israeli tanks shelled a position controlled by Hamas in the east of Gaza city.

The rockets are often fired by fringe groups but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all attacks from the territory.

One rocket, which the army failed to shot down, has reportedly damaged a building.

The Israeli army said it is now investigating the incident.

The rockets from Gaza were the first since December 18 and mark the most sustained fire from the Gaza Strip since the 2014 Israeli assault on Gaza.
