Forecast: Dangerously cold wind chill temperatures, some lake effect

But bitter cold is coming to much of the country. With wind chills as low as 35 degrees below zero, skin can freeze in a matter of 10 to 30 minutes if exposed. Temperatures are expected to remain frigid through the weekend.

Over 5 feet of snow has fallen in parts of western NY and Pennsylvania in a record-breaking lake effect snow event as bitter cold temperatures are heading to the Northeast.

Wind chills during the night from December 31 to January 1 may reach minus 12 degrees in Boston, minus 7 degrees in Chicago and minus 31 degrees in Minneapolis. Actual air temperature will struggle to reach 10° above today.

A Wind Chill Warning is in effect until midday Thursday for Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Madison, Chenango and Otsego counties.

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for southern Cayuga, Onondaga, Tompkins, Cortland, Seneca, Oswego and Wayne counties until noon.

Wind chills could dip to 15 to 25 degrees below zero.
