"The holiday period is a challenging time for Canadian Blood Services given that people are busy with their holiday plans and may not be thinking of blood donation, but you really never know when you or a loved one may need help so we are encouraging people to consider donating, " Lee said in a statement issued Wednesday. "We're having blood collection centers opening on Boxing Day, New Years and Christmas Eve, which is unusual for us because it (Christmas Eve) is a Sunday", he said.

The NHS particularly needs black and Asian blood donors to ensure the best match for patients with certain conditions but donation levels usually fall during the winter.
