'Hazardous' gaming habits could soon be labeled as health problem

To acknowledge this state of fact, the World Health Organisation has recognized a new type of mental health condition, calling it "gaming disorder" (via Digital Trends). It's called gaming disorder, and it's described by "a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior", or all the more essentially, a dependence on gaming. The new disorder, however, doesn't mean playing video games are awful for you or qualifies as a mental illness on its own.

Talking about the draft and the decision to put gaming disorder in the list, Vladimir Poznyak, a member of the WHO's Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, said, "Health professionals need to recognize that gaming disorder may have serious health consequences".

The World Health Organization will classify "gaming addiction" as an addictive behavior disorder, similar to gambling disorder, in its 2018 International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), according to a beta draft posted on the ICD website.

These symptoms normally must appear over a period of 12 months for a diagnosis, though it may be diagnosed in a shorter amount of time depending on the severity. "However, in certain circumstances overuse can lead to adverse effects".
