Chinese smartphone makers to take on Apple

For the past few years, we've been constantly hearing rumors that Xiaomi - a Chinese OEM that's very popular in Asia - plans to bring its sleek yet affordable smartphones to the US.

Those manufacturers are reportedly in talks with USA carriers to have them sell their phones. Given how cheap Xiaomi and Huawei phones can be when compared to Apple, Samsung and LG, it'll be interesting to see how the market shifts after these two companies enter the USA smartphone space.

Huawei Technologies Co. and Xiaomi Corp. are in talks with USA wireless operators about selling flagship smartphones to American consumers as soon as next year, according to people familiar with the matter.

And it's not only the budget Chinese phones catching up either.

Neither Xiaomi nor Huawei responded to a request for comment at the time of publication. With the aforementioned carriers being the biggest in the region, it will allow both companies to gain serious traction in the market. With this entry, especially through two of the most dominant carriers in the country, it's easy to see why the company's chiefs are so confident about becoming the best smartphone seller in the world.

It's also possible that the Xiaomi Mi 7 might not make it to the U.S. According to Xiaomi executive Wang Xiang, they have plans to hit the U.S. market within two years, which means the Mi 7 could probably be too soon.

Apple continues to bet big on expensive smartphones. By contrast, the flagship Huawei Mate 9 is on sale at Amazon for $400.

By striking deals with carriers, Xiaomi and Huawei would be able to offer their phones in those companies' retail stores and through their websites. Such developments could give them a lot more momentum in the American market than merely selling online. On top of that, the company's model of selling its phones directly through its website wouldn't translate well in the U.S., where most customers buy a phone through a carrier. Meanwhile, despite its struggles in China, the country still represents Apple's third-largest market by sales. "The hefty price of iPhone X is going to hurt sales in China".
