After Rocket Strikes On Territory, Israel Retaliates With Attacks On Gaza Posts

Protests broke out in Gaza and the West Bank and Jerusalem after US President Donald Trump chose to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

An Israeli siren smartphone app has warned that missiles were fired at southern Israel near the Gaza Strip on Thursday.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for all activity happening in the Gaza Strip.

"In response to that fire and the projectiles fired at Israel throughout the day that fell short in Gaza, an IDF tank and an [Israel Air Force] aircraft targeted two terror posts in Gaza", the military said in a statement.

During the Gaza war in 2014, Israel's Iron Dome rocket interceptor system largely protected the country's heartland from thousands of rocket barrages fired by terrorists.

"When it's going to an open field, we try not to scare the public", the spokesperson said.

Palestinians and security forces clashed earlier in the day along the Gaza border with reports of three Palestinians injured.

A lengthy list of US allies, regional powers and Palestinian politicians warned Trump against recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital in the lead-up to his announcement on Wednesday, saying that it would inflame tensions and provoke violence.

Reportedly, the leader of the Palestinian Islamist group, Hamas, has called for a new "intifada", or uprising, as protests broke out in Jerusalem, Ramallah and Bethlehem.

In a Wednesday address from the White House, Trump defied worldwide warnings and insisted that after repeated failures to achieve peace a new approach was long overdue, describing his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the seat of Israel's government as merely based on reality.
