Storm Caroline to bring snow and 80mph winds to the UK

A yellow snow and ice warning is in place for Friday for Scotland, Northern Ireland, western England and Wales.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: 'Wednesday will see the last of the mild days, with temperatures in double figures, between 10 and 12 degrees (50F-54F).

A yellow "be aware" warning has also been issued for southern Scotland and the north of Northern Ireland between 6am and 6pm on Thursday.

The wintry weather follows snow and cold temperatures experienced in parts of Scotland earlier this month.

Thursday night will have scattered rain, hail and snow showers; the snow could also settle, especially in the north and northwest.

"Overnight, the main feature will be the increase in wind as Caroline starts to come in towards the end of the night".

Showers could affect all regions and at times more persistent periods of rain, sleet and snow are possible.

In a yellow warning, the forecaster said: "Gusts of 60-70 miles per hour are expected quite widely, with gusts to 80 miles per hour possible near north facing mainland coasts and across the Isles".

The weather is expected to turn wet and windy on Wednesday, especially across the north and west of the United Kingdom, before the gales hit on Thursday. Some short-term loss of power and other services is possible.

Winds are forecast to strengthen across parts of Britain on Wednesday ahead of the arrival of Storm Caroline.

"On Friday and Saturday, the snow showers could lead to snow accumulations which vary markedly across the warning area".
