Support pours in as San Marcos community processes killing of beloved officer

A suspect has been taken into custody after a police officer in San Marcos, Texas, was shot and killed Monday afternoon while he was serving a warrant, authorities said.

A thin blue line has been added to the San Marcos police badge in the department's lobby.

As the San Marcos Police Department comes to terms with the tragedy it's been hit with, deputies from the Hays County Sheriff's office came to show their support Monday night.

The suspect is said to be in an Austin-area hospital. "His picture is hanging in different parts of this police department because everyone here loved him", said Chief Stapp. It was not immediately known whether the suspect shot himself or was shot by an officer on the scene, Stapp said.

Copeland joined the department March 30, 1998, serving SMPD for 19 years and 9 months as a Police Officer. Copeland leaves behind a wife and four children.

She assured them that their demand for including local fishermen in the rescue operations would be accepted. "It was a nightmare", said a rescued fisherman.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) offered his condolences to Copeland's family and ordered the city's flags lowered to half-staff in his honor.

A nearby elementary school was placed on lock down and students who were outside at the time waiting to be picked up were brought back inside the building. We remember the sacrifices our men and women in law enforcement make every day. He also worked security at the Promiseland Church on the edge of town, Pastor Michael Higgins told the station. We have to appreciate the fine men and women who are out there serving the public's interest in their jobs.

"There's a lot of great officers", Higgins said.
