Lebanese Prime Minister Revokes Resignation Amid Consensus Deal With Rivals

Hariri's Saudi allies accuse Hezbollah of waging war across the Middle East as agents of Iran.

On Tuesday, Hariri revoked his resignation after all factions of the Lebanese government - including the militant group Hezbollah, with whom he shares power - agreed to stay out of regional conflicts, his press office said.

Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran have always been fighting over dominance of the Middle East by supporting opposing forces in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Lebanon.

"I presented today my resignation to President Aoun and he urged me to wait before offering it and to hold onto it for more dialogue about its reasons and political background, and I showed responsiveness", he said in a televised statement.

Hariri withdrew his resignation Tuesday after a Cabinet session where ministers unanimously endorsed a fresh dissociation policy.

"The Lebanese government, in all its political components, has committed to distance itself from all conflicts, wars, and internal affairs of Arab states", said a cabinet statement read out loud by Hariri.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri speaks after a cabinet meeting in Baabda near Beirut, Lebanon December 5, 2017.

Hariri, a wealthy Sunni businessman with long ties to the kingdom, had denounced Iran during his resignation speech and said he was outside Lebanon because he feared for his family's safety.

In a speech during the cabinet session, Hariri warned that the tensions in the region could easily drag Lebanon down a unsafe route, and the issues which had led to the crisis could be ignored.

The Lebanese President had said at the time Hariri was being held against his will in Riyadh, a claim Hariri denied.

Hezbollah, however, needs a Sunni partner in Lebanon and will make an effort to maintain Hariri's coalition government.

Hariri also announced that he will travel o Paris on Friday to meet with French diplomats and the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for talks on the recent upheaval.
