International Olympic Committee suspends Russian Federation from 2018 Winter Olympics

International Olympic Committee suspends Russian Federation from 2018 Winter Olympics

Russia's Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Schmid's report included a 50-page sworn affidavit from Rodchenkov, who was also a key witness for McLaren and an International Olympic Committee disciplinary commission.

The IOC stopped short of that, instead saying that some Russian athletes will be permitted to compete in Pyeongchang under a specially created status, "Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR)", according to the IOC statement. They would have to pass drug tests to prove they were clean and also did not benefit from the Sochi scheme. If, for some reason, a Russian athlete is permitted to compete in the Games, they won't be doing it as a Russian athlete, but in a neutral uniform.

The Pyeongchang games run through February 25.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously said it would be humiliating for his country to compete without national symbols.

That Oswald Commission called the Russian doping system "one of the worst ever blows against the integrity and reputation of the Olympic Games".

Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov was suspended as a member of the IOC.

"Of course we want our athletes there, and we want the Russian flag and anthem", he said.

Some Russian athletes may be invited to compete neutrally under specific circumstances.

To exclude the then Minister of Sport, Mr Vitaly Mutko, and his then Deputy Minister, Mr. Yuri Nagornykh, from any participation in all future Olympic Games.

Mutko, who was also banned from the Rio 2016 Summer Games, had been implicated in the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency)-commissioned McLaren report.

Ultimately, the IOC's acceptance of the evidence that Russian had run the system led it to a different decision than it reached past year when it sought to balance collective responsibility with individual justice.

The previous time that happened was in a 17-9 loss in the 2014 season finale, when Brady played just one half. White was making a lot of contact with the tight end, but wasn't flagged for holding or pass interference.

Of the growing number of athletes who have been stripped of their medals, Bach said the IOC is looking at how to give the clean athletes who are elevated to the podium the recognition they deserve as they are recognized with Olympic medals. The International Olympic Committee, after completing its own prolonged investigations that reiterated what had been known for more than a year, handed Russian Federation penalties for doping so severe they were without precedent in Olympics history.

The sanctions could be challenged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The collective action comes as an International Olympic Committee commission has disqualified 25 Russian athletes from Sochi, resulting in the loss of 11 medals.

The CEO of the Sochi Olympics, Dmitry Chernyshenko, also had his place on an Olympic panel overseeing the 2022 Beijing Winter Games withdrawn by the IOC.

The ruling cemented that the nation was guilty of executing an extensive state-backed doping program.
