What appears to be North Korean soldiers are also seen standing guard around where the people are working. Military officials said Friday they could not confirm the report.

A photo posted on the Twitter account of the acting USA ambassador to South Korea, Marc Knapper, showed North Korean workers using shovels to dig what Knapper said was a trench at the spot where the defector crossed the border. He was shot five times and is now recovering at a hospital near Seoul where he was operated twice to fix internal organ damage and other injuries.

There is the possibility that Pak Rim Su, a North Korean major general, is being questioned about the incident and may be held responsible for allowing the soldier to defect. The 24-year-old soldier, identified only by his surname, Oh, is recovering in a South Korean hospital after being shot at least four times by his comrades as he dashed across the border. "The North seems retracing the escape route to plug up loopholes", a military spokesman here said.
