Ikea recalls 29 million chests and dressers after death of EIGHTH child

It has a "Secure It!" campaign to raise awareness of the issue.

According to BuzzFeed, the furniture company received 186 reports of incidents involving the Malm chests and dressers, with 91 of those reports involving injuries to children.

Despite the recall in the United States and Canada, Ikea has not made a similar move in the UK. Customers who weren't able to get through were advised to either email the company, visit a store, or contact IKEA for a choice of a free wall-anchoring fix kit or a refund.

Hitting the road a Thanksgiving tradition
The American Automobile Association says almost 51 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles for Thanksgiving . Fuller skies: The largest growth in holiday travel is by air travel, at five percent, with 3.95 million travelers.

The new recall applies to children's chests of drawers taller than 60cm and adult drawers taller than 75cm and includes the Malm range.

If you own or think you may own one of these dressers, contact Ikea immediately for a refund or a kit to attach the dresser to your wall to prevent it from tipping over.

William Wallace of Consumers Union, the policy and action division of Consumer Reports, toldThe Philadelphia Inquirer that Ikea should promote the dangers posed by its dressers with the same vigor it put "into marketing the product in the first place". Since 1996, IKEA chests and dressers have been labeled to identify IKEA, the model name and the manufacturing date. In addition to the deaths, IKEA says more than 140 children have been injured by dressers that have toppled over, pinning them underneath. To avoid injury or death, IKEA recommends bolting the Malm dressers and others like it to the wall so that it is secure.

Ann Marie Buerkle, chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said Ikea had "worked hard" on the recall and had provided options that "as least burdensome to the consumer as it could be". CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters and household chemicals - contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 40 years. To report a unsafe product or a product-related injury go online to www.SaferProducts.gov or call CPSC's Hotline at 800-638-2772 or teletypewriter at 301-595-7054 for the hearing impaired. However, the Malm series has become infamous for a much more serious reason: it has now been recalled for a second time. Media Contact Please use the phone numbers below for all media requests.
