Crowds gather outside Zimbabwe parliament as Mugabe faces impeachment

Robert Mugabe agreed on Sunday to resign as Zimbabwe's president hours after the ruling ZANU-PF party fired him as its leader following 37 years in charge, a source familiar with the negotiations said.

Parliament is due to open impeachment proceedings on Tuesday against Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980 and is the only leader numerous country's population have ever known.

In displays similar to the fall with Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu back in 1989, males, ladies and youngsters jogged next to armored vehicles and members of the military which moved with this week to get rid of the only real leader Zimbabwe has identified with, ever since the independence of 1980.

America, the long Mugabe critic, stated it was eager for a "new era" within Zimbabwe, whilst President Ian Khama with bordering Botswana, mentioned Mugabe didn't have any diplomatic help in the area and really should step down right away.

Mugabe's political demise is the effect of a struggle over who would succeed him in ZANU-PF, a party split between those loyal to Mnangagwa and supporters of Grace Mugabe.

The economy collapsed after the seizure of white-owned farms in 2000.
