"Do not panic. Stay away from areas within a 6km to 7.5km radius of the volcano", he said on his Twitter account.

"To us this is not an eruption", Made Indra, from Bali's disaster mitigation agency, told AFP.

"Already, it's erupted", PVMBG head Gede Suantika said.

More than 140,000 people had fled their homes in recent months before Mount Agung began belching smoke 700m above its summit on Tuesday.

The ash cloud is risky to breathe and hazardous to aircraft engines, but it is so small - so far - and has not yet affected operations at Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Terry Glenn: Former New England Patriots WR dies in vehicle wreck
Glenn was the seventh overall pick in the 1996 draft by the Patriots after a stellar, yet improbable, career at Ohio State. He was revived at the Cowboys though and had more than 1,000 receiving yards in both of his two final full seasons.

Back then, more than 1,000 people died on the slopes of the volcano - many killed by clouds of hot gas called "pyroclastic flows".

The last eruption of mount Agung dates back to 1963 and was then made almost 1,600 people dead in total.

The alert level has been placed at three and communities are being urged to remain calm.

The mount Agung, which has a little more than 3000 meters above sea level and is situated approximately 75 kilometres of the main tourist destinations of Kuta and Seminyak, growls since the month of August and could erupt for the first time since 1963.

US-based volcanologist Dr Janine Krippner has been following Mt Agung's rumblings since September.

"Time to make sure you are prepared and keep an eye on official Agung information".

Indonesia is home to around 130 volcanoes due to its position on the "Ring of Fire", a belt of tectonic plate boundaries circling the Pacific Ocean where frequent seismic activity occurs.

Officials estimated concerns about an eruption over the past few months had cost Bali at least £80million in lost tourism and productivity as many local residents moved to shelters.

On Oct 29, the centre lowered the volcano's alert level by one notch after it had previously appeared to be on the brink of eruption.
