Dalveer Bhandari's re-election to ICJ reflective of India's constitutional integrity: MEA

Hailing Bhandari's re-election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed it as a proud moment and credited external affairs ministry Sushma Swaraj and her ministry's officials for their efforts in ensuring his success.

Now, this is one of the most wonderful things because While India's argument was that selection of candidates should reflect the India's growing position in the world order, Justice Bhandari had a very interesting value addition to India's case. She added: "Huge efforts by Team MEA". "Vande Matram - India wins election to the International Court of Justice". To be elected, the candidate needed a majority in both the chambers.

On November 9, the UNGA and Security Council members had elected judges to four of the five seats up for re-election this year from Brazil, France, Lebanon and Somalia, with the fate of the candidates from India and Britain hanging in the balance.

The withdrawal of its candidate by Britain, which had the backing of its fellow permanent members, was a setback for the Security Council that had been locked in a test of wills with the Assembly.

Lawrence said PIRG has repeatedly been invited to join in on this process and has refused, saying they don't have the resources. PIRG "is needlessly frightening parents and caregivers during what is supposed to be a joyful time of year".

Britain's Christopher Greenwood and India's Dalveer Bhandari were forced into a runoff for the fifth seat. Elections are held in the United National General Assembly (UNGA) and the UN Security Council in NY, separately but simultaneously.

Different voting results in both United Nations organs resulted in a deadlock and ICJ postponed the voting for November 13.

"Modi's pursuit to get India recognised on world stage has resulted in it gaining pre-eminence in Asia, which has been dominated by hostile neighbour China", he said.

Greenwood, 62, received nine votes as against five by Bhandari in the Security Council.

Trump administration ends temporary protection for Haitians
Successive administrations have repeatedly renewed TPS status of the Central Americans and Haitians for between six and 18 months. Bill Nelson, D, hosted a meeting last week with Duke to which all members of the state's congressional delegation were invited.

"The precedent is clear", India's Permanent Representative Akbaruddin said at a reception for Bhandari attended by representatives of over 160 countries on Thursday. The British candidate, however, had nine votes in the United Nations security council against the Indian's five. The UK made a decision to withdraw its candidate, Christopher Greenwood, after a closely fought electoral process.

In the successive rounds of elections spread over two days in the last two weeks, Bhandari, 70, enjoyed almost two- third majority in the 193-member Assembly.

As per the records, after withdrawing their candidate, the United Kingdom will not have a judge on the bench of the ICJ for the first time in its 71-year history.
