"This event is really something people love to participate in", said Sleyster.

"Everything that you can think of that you would have in your own Thanksgiving meal, we want to make sure every family has access to that", Heiple said.

Dawson said the church is excited to bring back a community tradition. Sleyster says both volunteers and attendees have made the dinner a special event for a quarter-century.

Scott United Methodist Church will also serve dinner beginning at 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving, according to Pastor Denise Watts-Wilson. This provided a number of students the comfort and experience of a Thanksgiving meal, but there are many more people who do not have a place to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner.

IFFI 2017 connecting the world through stories
As Canada is the country of focus for this year's IFFI , a special feature showing life and nature in Canada was also presented. The International Competition section of IFFI 2017 will have 15 films competing for the Golden and Silver Peacock awards.


From the church, "If you or someone you know would be blessed by a great Thanksgiving feast on Thanksgiving Day please stop by for the meal and/or let them know about this community meal".

The group also needs donations for its Christmas Box program that is aimed at providing food to local students during the long holiday break, who otherwise receive assistance through the backpack program during the school year, Pearman said. "I hope in the future other people will keep it going after we're gone".

Meals are served to the homeless and underprivileged from noon to 2 p.m. the first Saturday of each month at the New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 1917 Carolina St.in Gary.

You can drop these items off at the Ag Building at the Kansas Expocentre Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m.to 8 p.m.

Neustel said as the event continues to grow, organization and planning become more important each year, although that doesn't mean the process of preparing that much food gets easier.

"Some of the businesses in town give cash donations and others donate food products", Corwin said.

Hanna said the foundation is offering rides to the event so people can call to make an appointment.
