What about Jake Gyllenhaal as Batman?

What about Jake Gyllenhaal as Batman?

Ben Affleck arrives for the world premiere of Warner Bros.

Affleck is reprising his role as Batman in Justice League tomorrow, November 17, 2017. For the time being, however, an official decision on the matter has yet to be made. On Thursday, a new report suggested that Affleck's trepidation may be well founded as new director Matt Reeves is said to have had meetings with potential replacements for the role which include none other than Jake Gyllenhaal. Although this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt until further notice, it might not be so far-fetched. But for the sake of perspective, ComicBook.com has dug up an old interview of Jake Gyllenhaal on The Howard Stern Show (see below), in which the actor discussed what it would be like to play Bruce Wayne's masked alter-ego. If one new rumor is to be believed, apparently Jake Gyllenhaal is being looked at for the job.

The character of Robin was ultimately deleted from the script, with Marlon Wayans signing on for the role in Batman Returns, only for the part to be cut once again. Though superhero movies have regularly recast roles within franchises without resetting the narrative (case in point: Maggie Gyllenhaal took over for Katie Holmes in Nolan's Batman movies), the shared DC cinematic universe hasn't done that yet.

With solo outing The Batman still on the horizon, rumours over the past year have had Affleck in and out more times than the hokey cokey, and the latest word is leaning towards him being replaced for the movie.

That being said, nothing has been set in stone at this stage. Ben Affleck, the most recent actor to don the cape and cowl, just said he's looking for "a graceful and cool way to segue out of" the role.

Affleck was initially in line to direct The Batman, before deciding to step down in order to focus on his performance. Until further notice, any prediction on the matter is fair game.
