The Bernstein Brief: Jerry Jones-vs.-NFL Just Got More Interesting

Someone (presumably from within the group of owners who support Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in his fight against the Compensation Committee) has told Scott Wapner of CNBC that more than half of all owners want to wait to extend Commissioner Roger Goodell's contract, "if for no other reason than they think the timing doing it now would be a P.R. disaster".

"We urge Mr. Jones to honor the resolution that he and his fellow owners adopted and allow the Committee to continue its work, in compliance with the May 2017 Resolution and the League Constitution". The other owners just sent a letter of censure to Jones's lawyer David Boies, accusing Jones of "conduct detrimental to the league" and stating that they have had enough of his damaging "antics" that include threatened lawsuits if he doesn't get his way, the New York Times reported Wednesday night. On Monday they sent Jones a cease-and-desist notice. All the other National Football League owners also received a copy of the letter, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Venezuela defaults on foreign debt repayments
The United States has designated El Aissami himself a drug kingpin whom USA entities are barred from dealing with. Venezuela's envoy to the UN, Rafael Ramirez, called the meeting a "hostile" act of USA "interference".

Jones has denied that his objections to the extension are tied to Goodell's decision to suspend Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott for six games over alleged domestic violence. All 32 owners voted unanimously in May to let the committee finalize a deal with Goodell. Jones has continued to make public comments since then.

"There is no legitimate basis for Mr. Jones to circulate to the full ownership a three-month-old document from a consultant to the Committee - a document that Mr. Jones personally knows to be an outdated, historical artifact of no relevance whatsoever in the context of these lengthy negotiations."

Bellinger also finished the year with a.933 OPS-10th among NL hitters-and a robust 4.0 wins above replacement, per FanGraphs . Bellinger batted.267 with 87 runs scored, 26 doubles, four triples, 39 home runs, 97 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 132 games.

That didn't sit well with the committee which is headed by Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

Jones is seeking to at least delay completion of the contract, with Goodell's current deal in effect until 2019.

One prominent owner, who wished to remain anonymous, replied by text: "I have zero awareness of any such conversations", but added, "The league has options to consider conduct detrimental to the league built into the league constitution".
