Taliban kill 8 policemen in country's west

More than 70 Afghan police officers and five unit commanders may have been killed in a series of attacks in southern and western Afghanistan on Monday night and yesterday, with the Taleban reportedly using night-vision technology in the attacks.

Helal said that some gunbattles between the attackers and security forces continued until the morning.

"We have 22 policemen martyred and 15 others are wounded", Ullah said, adding 35 militants were also wounded in the clashes.

Another police official, Zia Durrani, said none of the checkpoints was captured in the attacks.

"Our forces resisted until they received reinforcements and air support", said Zia Durrani, spokesman for Kandahar's police chief. "The Taliban were defeated".

Khalid Pashtun, a member of parliament from the region, put the total number of police killed in Kandahar at 37 and 30 wounded.

However, a nephew of the police official was killed, an ALP officer wounded and parts of the house and a ranger-type police vehicle caught fire in the overnight incident.

A spokesman for NATO's Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan said four US service members were injured in the blast.
