The daughter of a police detective and a teacher, Muhammad grew up with four siblings in Maplewood and discovered fencing when she was 13 years old, winning medals and accolades until she qualified for the Olympics in 2016. The doll looks like a copy of the woman athlete: the new Barbie doll wears a fencer's suit and has a fit figure. "I just love it", she said.

The Barbie designed in her likeness has full fencing gear, including a mask and sabre, wears training shoes and has a hijab around her head.

"I think that having strong legs helped me win a medal at the Olympic Games, so I wanted my legs to be larger, more athletic legs, toned legs". I'm also really big into eyeliner. "I wore it to the Olympic games, so I wanted my Barbie to have the flawless winged liner and also to wear a hijab". "I come from a pretty small sport that a lot of people had the opportunity to learn about last summer at the Olympic games and now to even have fencers in the conversation", she says.
