Senegal qualifies to World Cup

Senegal's last appearance in the World Cup was in 2002 in South Korea and Japan, where they make it to the quarterfinals but failed to advance further after sustaining a 1-0 defeat to Turkey.

Senegal held on in the second half to ensure they would finish on top of Group D regardless of their result against South Africa in their final match next week.

FIFA's unprecedented decision to order a replay and give Senegal another chance after finding Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey guilty of match-fixing caused serious discontent among the other teams in Senegal's group. With games against Southampton, Sevilla and Chelsea to come in the Premier League and the Champions League, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will sincerely hope that Mane is afforded time off of playing duty when Senegal line up against South Africa on Tuesday.

It took few touches from the Lions of Teranga to tear through the Bafana defence, with Sadio Mane slicing through the defence with a killer pass to set up Sakho, and then Sakho put Mane through for the Liverpool attacker to force the own goal.

South Africa came even closer soon after when Lebogang Manyama swept a low cross against the crossbar and Senegal hastily cleared the loose ball.

Bafana would live to rue those missed opportunities though, as Mane was again in the thick of the action in the 38th minute when his shot was blocked by Khune but ricocheted off Thamsanqa Mkhize into his own net as Senegal went 2-0 up.
