Driverless vehicle involved in crash in first hour of first day

The delivery truck's driver didn't see the shuttle and backed into it.

"From what I've been told, the vehicle came to a stop as it's created to do, based on the distance it was from this particular truck".

The autonomous bus made its debut on public roads around the so called Innovation District in downtown Las Vegas in front of cameras and celebrities, dubbed America's first self-driving shuttle pilot project geared toward the public.

On Wednesday, to much fanfare, a self-driving electric shuttle bus launched in Las Vegas.

An autonomous shuttle vehicle has been involved in a traffic collision in Las Vegas, just two hours after beginning operations.

Thankfully no-one was injured and the damage was light, however local news reports that the driver of the truck was cited with police confirming that the shuttle bus was not at fault in the incident. The free, eight-passenger vehicle rode along a three-stop, half-mile loop on Fremont Street and Carson Avenue in the downtown area.

"The shuttle did its job in that the sensors hit on the truck, knew the truck was coming and stopped as it was supposed to do". The AAA said human error was responsible for more than 90% of the 30,000 deaths on U.S. roads in 2016, and that robotic cars could help reduce the number of incidents.

It's the first time the shuttles have been tested in the United States but they have already arrived in London, where the former Olympic park in Stratford began a trial by Navya and Keolis in September. The Kelolis driverless shuttle bus crashed with a semi-truck.

Although the shuttle remained out of service for the rest of the day, testing will continue as part of a 12-month pilot program, according to the city.

The technology of autonomous cars is still being perfected; advocates suggest self-driving cars are safe and reliable, as they remove human error.
