Obama heads to downtown Chicago for jury duty

Former US President Barack Obama, free of a job that forced him to move to Washington for eight years, has turned up for jury duty at a downtown Chicago courthouse.

Also unlike a lot of them, the former president got dismissed before noon, reports the Chicago Tribune.

The ex-president's Secret Service detail parked under the courthouse, and then ferried Obama up to the 17th floor jury assembly room via an elevator usually reserved just for judges. "No one is excused", Evans said after Obama's departure. As happens most days, would-be jurors brought books, but on Wednesday some people brought books Obama had authored in hopes he might sign them.

Earlier this year, lawmakers including Senator Amy Klobuchar , a Democrat from Minnesota, said the deal raises antitrust concerns. From the campaign trail, Trump criticized the deal, saying that he would reject it because it concentrated media power.

Before heading to court, the former president took time to tweet about Tuesday night's high-profile state and mayoral election results seen as a sweeping repudiation of the politics of his White House successor Donald Trump. The official, who is not authorized to speak about the former president's jury duty, spoke on condition of anonymity.

Evans also said that he brought letters from Cook County's juvenile detention center for Obama, some of which asked him to come visit - an idea that Obama committed to, according to Evans.

Like other jurors, Obama will be paid $17.20 for each day of service. "If the former president can come, anyone can come", he continued.

While the Obamas now live in Washington, the former president and first lady Michelle Obama maintain a home in Chicago, the city where he got his political start.

A decade later, Lawrence Tureaud, better known as Mr T, showed up to a suburban Chicago courthouse for jury duty, sporting his usual Mohawk, but without the gold chains for which he is known.
