Italy legend Andrea Pirlo calls time on career

His brief stint at Inter ended when he was sold to the club's biggest rivals AC Milan and that is where his career really took off. Pirlo won two UEFA Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups, two Serie A titles, a FIFA Club World Cup, SuperCoppa Italiana as well as the Coppa Italia in a successful tenure with the Italian giants of Milan between 2003 and 2011.

Pirlo, who played his last match for New York City this weekend, called time on one of the most illustrious careers a footballer could hope for.

Pirlo posted a statement on Twitter thanking his family and every team he "had the honor to play for, every teammate I have been pleased to play alongside, all the people that made my career such incredible and last but not least, all the fans around the world that always showed me support".

Pirlo began his career at Brescia before moving to leading Serie A clubs such as Inter, AC Milan and Juventus.

Pirlo made a late substitute appearance for NY, who won 2-0 at the Yankee Stadium but lost the two-legged tie 4-3 on aggregate.

The 38-year midfielder, who won 116 caps for Italy across a 13-year global career, helped the side with the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
