Among those killed was the provincial police chief, Torialai Abdyani.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that "We strongly condemn the barbaric attack at the Afghan National Army base in Kandahar province". The Taliban have killed at least 58 Afghan security forces in a wave of attacks across the country, including an assault that almost wiped out the Maiwand camp in the southern Kandahar province. Militants have long disguised themselves in Afghan security uniforms in their raids, and using security forces' vehicles would make them more complicated to spot at checkpoints or at the gates of security compounds.

The official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, said the militants failed to overrun the base as reinforcement arrived at the scene. "In the clashes, 43 have embraced martyrdom, 9 are wounded, 6 are missing and 2 have survived", Gen. Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the MoD said.

Militants were once again attacking a police base in Ghazni on Thursday, but officials did not have information on casualties.

The Taliban have been waging an insurgency for a decade and a half in an attempt to overthrow the government in Kabul.

They began hours after USA drone strikes in the tribal region along the border with Pakistan killed more than two dozen militants, according to sources and local officials.
