Bear Fire burns in Santa Cruz Mountains, threatens 150 homes

An air tanker and an air attack plane were also working the area, but heavy smoke prevented the use of additional aircraft, said Cal Fire Division Chief Rob Sherman.

Firefighters said resources won't be an issue, even though Cal Fire has been spread out all over California.

A 150-acre wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains is 5 percent contained at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to Cal Fire.

It quickly spread to 125 acres and is threatening about 150 homes. The blaze started as a house fire that ignited late Monday night near Bear Creek and Deer Creek roads.

Portions of Highway 9 from Highway 7 to Boulder Creek are closed, according to Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office Lt. Jim Ross.

Mandatory evacuation orders were put in place for residents living on Deer Creek Road, Rons Road, Dons Road, Lost Valley Road, Favre Ridge Road and Oak Ridge Road.

All residents are believed to have evacuated safely and are staying at two evacuation centers - Boulder Creek Elementary School at 400 W. Lomond Boulder Creek and the Zayante Fire Department at 7700 E. "This is very steep, rugged terrain with hard access".
